WHY.011 | Why The Lid Matters?

The Book of WHY is an ongoing collection of the decisions behind every Lowrey product, ingredient and design choice.

A lid that protects freshness cannot feel loose by accident.

The Tin

The lid is part of the product.

A firm-fitting lid is not a design detail. It is part of how a delicate butter cookie stays protected after the tin is opened.

The Question

Why does the Lowrey tin lid fit so tightly?

Because the lid is part of protecting the cookie.

Lowrey butter cookies are delicate. Their soft crumb, butter content and melt-in-your-mouth texture need protection from air, moisture and time.

A loose lid may be easier to open, but it would not do the same job after the tin has been opened and closed again.

So the lid is designed to feel firm. Not to annoy anyone. Though apparently it has accepted that role with impressive confidence.

The Friction

A tight lid asks for effort.

We understand that a firm lid can feel harder to open.

But that firmness helps the tin close securely, especially after the first opening, when the cookies still need protection.

The Purpose

The lid helps slow change.

Air and moisture can change a butter cookie.

A firm-fitting lid helps reduce that exposure and keeps the cookie closer to the texture it was made to have.

The Three Reasons

Three reasons the lid matters.

01

It protects against air.

Butter cookies can change when exposed to air for too long. A firm lid helps reduce that exposure after opening.

02

It helps resist moisture.

Moisture can affect the crumb and eating experience. The lid helps the tin stay better closed between servings.

03

It supports storage.

Lowrey tins are often opened more than once. A tighter lid helps protect the remaining cookies after the first serving.

We choose a firmer lid because freshness needs resistance.

The Decision

Lowrey uses a tight-fitting lid for a reason.

A loose lid would be easier to lift. It would also offer less protection once the tin is open.

Lowrey butter cookies are not made to sit uncovered. Their delicate texture depends on being protected from the things that slowly change food: air, moisture and time.

That is why we ask customers to press the lid back firmly after opening and enjoy the cookies while they are at their best.

The lid is not separate from the product. It is part of how the product stays closer to what we intended.

The Lowrey Principle

The lid is part of the freshness.

A tin is not only for presentation. It has work to do after the first cookie is taken.

We choose a firm lid because a delicate butter cookie deserves protection beyond the first opening.
